Recently, I’ve seen a lot of people on Twitter asking what plus size folk would like to see from brands in 2017 & every time my answer is more sculptural, oversized pieces. It feels like plus size brands are still stuck in a mindset where those of us above a UK18 are terrified of any piece which shifts our bodies away from mainstream – thin, curves is the right places, flat stomachs – beauty standards.
I’m not saying I’m not immune to anxiety about how “flattering” pieces will be – hell, it took me over a week to build up the courage to buy this top because I was terrified it would transform into a frumpy sack on my body. But, newsflash, it looks great! I love that it’s such an unusual shape, & that the ruffles sit slightly awkwardly at elbow-level. I love that the denim gives it a stiffness that you wouldn’t get with a plan cotton. I even love the cold-shoulders.
I’m obsessed with the distressed denim details of the top so it totally made sense to pair it with these ripped jeans from ASOS, & I chose this great varsity jacket from New Look to contrast with the more feminine ruffles. I can totally see myself wearing this outfit on a relaxed date night & can’t wait to throw this top on over a bikini in the Summer.
