Welcome to a new series on my blog & Youtube channel: Hits & Shits. I’ve borrowed the concept from the incredible Rachel Whitehurst but it’s pretty simple: hits are the things I’ve been loving this month, & shits are this month’s downers. I hope you enjoy it!
June was a super busy month for me: winding up the commitments I had with my old student union, graduating & job hunting. It was also the month I got my first Birchbox & made my first order with Simply Be after months of window shopping – exciting stuff! Anyway, on with the list:
Graduation – The big hit this month has to be finally graduating after four years studying Politics at the University of Edinburgh. The ceremony itself was pretty dull, & the gown was pretty much the least flattering thing I’ve ever worn, but it was great to celebrate an achievement I’m really proud of. It was also lovely to celebrate my partner’s graduation alongside him & his parents, plus after the ceremony we headed to Kyloe for the best meal I think I’ve ever eaten!
Orange is the New Black – I know I’m about a million years late to this, but Orange is the New Black is amazing! Not only is it super funny, but it’s also really heart-warming in parts, & to see such a diverse range of women portrayed on screen is great when there are still plenty of films that can’t even pass the Bechdel Test. I would also 100% recommend checking out these photos of the cast at NYC Pride.
ASOS Curve Jeggings – I’ve never really been a jeans person. I’ve mentioned before that my hip to waist ratio makes finding well-fitting trousers a nightmare, but these jeggings from ASOS Curve fit like a glove & I’ve been wearing them pretty much non-stop to celebrate. They’re in a thick but super stretchy acid wash denim, with zip detailing which makes them nice & grungy. I originally bought them full price but they’re now on sale for £24 which is a bargain & I’d highly recommend everyone buy a pair ASAP.
Summer Lipsticks – These have been my go-to lipsticks for June. The one on the left is a Revlon lipstick in Kiss Me Coral which is a perfect warm coral colour for Spring/Summer, & the one on the right is a Rimmel lipstick in shade Sloane’s Plum. The Revlon lipstick is over four years old (sorry if you’re sketched out by people using old makeup!) but I recently rediscovered it on a trip back home & it quickly worked its way into my makeup bag. The Rimmel one I bought a few months ago, but actually never really used it due to the fact that it broke pretty much the day after I bought it & wouldn’t twist up. However, when I tried it again last week it was magically fixed & I’ve been loving this slightly cooler-toned plum shade.
Naked3 – Another classic product which I’ve come back to this month is the Naked3 palette. I bought this as a Christmas present to myself & used it pretty much everyday for a couple of months, before drifting back to the Naked2 palette in around March (I was just really feeling the cool-toned browns). However, I pulled the Naked3 back out for my graduation & loved it. I used a combination of Burnout & Trick on my lid with one of the matte shades in my crease & it looked really beautiful – I genuinely think you can’t go wrong with this palette.
Soap & Glory Archery Brow Tint & Pencil – A new product which I’ve been loving this month is the Archery Brow Tint & Precision Shaping Pencil in shade Love is Blonde from Soap & Glory. I’ve never really been a fan of the scents in Soap & Glory’s bath & body products, but I think their beauty products are great quality & good value for money – my Supercat liner has lasted me almost a year now with no signs of running out. I love the fact that this product contains a pencil which is perfect for giving brows a bit more definition, & a pen which is fantastic for filling in “missing” hairs, particularly at the outer ends of your brows.
Job Hunting – The big shit this month has to be job hunting – it really is soul destroying – but there’s nothing to do except carry on with it (& rant about the evils Capitalism to anyone who’ll listen!).
Caudalie Vinoperfect Moisturiser – My only other shit is the Caudalie Vinoperfect Day Perfecting Fluid. If you watched or read my Birchbox review then you’ll know that I was quite impressed by this lightweight moisturiser when I first tried it (& I absolutely stand by what I said) but having accidentally got it in my eye on a couple of occasions it’s now firmly on my no-go list. Despite washing my eyes out with a little water this product left them stinging, swollen & watering for a good 30 minutes. I’m not sure if I just had a particularly bad reaction to it but as someone who doesn’t normally react to products I’d suggest steering clear of this, or at least making sure you keep it a million miles away from your eyes.
So that’s my hits & shits for June. What have you been loving or loathing this month? Let me know in the comments below!
